Characteristics of a Sabino
Arabian horse: A bald, wide or apron blaze that extends over the muzzle and under the jaw, with or without black spots on or around the muzzle or white that extends or occurs past where the bridle would lay. High white stockings that extend past mid-knee or mid-hock or disconnected leg markings. Some form of body white, belly, girth spot etc. is also common. A loudly marked overo looking horse with lacey markings. In some cases the foal may be born almost pure white, usually with some speckles of chestnut or bay or black in the body and usually has a medicine hat (dark markings on the ears and forelock resembling a hat). Foals who are born almost pure white are not to be confused with the lethal white foal which dies at birth or shortly thereafter, a Sabino white foal is born healthy. Sabino is not a gene, but rather a phenotypical phenomenon, a trait likely either due to multiple genes, or due to genes that are incompletely expressed, or have other genes modifying whether they get turned "on" or "off". The Sabino trait is not to be confused with the Roaning trait or Rabicano trait. They are completely different traits that can sometimes occur together but are not necessarily indicative of Sabino. |
